Clean Cookstoves

SJEDI is positioning itself to meet this demand with the next goal of distributing at least 100,000 improved cookstoves in Liberia from 2011 – 2020. From there, the company will be positioned to expand into neighboring countries where the potential for growth expands exponentially. SJEDIs cookstove project has tremendous social impact, touching over 250,000 lives, preventing thousands of Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) related illness and deaths, saving over 450,000 tones of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, and decreasing Liberia’s deforestation rate by over 50%. Green Charcoal

SJEDI is creating a green charcoal production facility on Robertsfield highway to manufacture “green charcoal” made of agricultural waste, old trees, and other biomass. This program will prevent deforestation and create economic opportunity for thousands of farmers who would otherwise burn agricultural waste after harvesting or pruning their fields. The green charcoal has a higher caloric value than regular charcoal, is clean with less smoke and toxic emissions, lasts longer, and costs less. This program also qualifies for carbon emission reductions on the voluntary market. Jatropha Biofuel

SJEDI is the first company in Liberia to grow a jatropha farm and is ready to produce pure plant oil from these amazing trees. This oil will run trucks, tractors, generators, and other equipment and is entirely produced by Liberian farmers who will benefit greatly from the sale of the oil and lower fuel costs for their own operations and personal use. Using jatropha-calibrated generators, SJEDI has electrified 5 villages in Nimba county. Read More…

Kuroiler Chicken Program

The vision is to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for poor rural households in Liberia. The goals are four-fold: a) increase the availability of eggs and meat for household consumption by introducing a high-performance, dual purpose backyard chicken, Kuroiler, bred specifically to thrive in village conditions; b) increase family revenue by enabling families to sell surplus poultry eggs and meat; c) establish a financially self-sustaining Kuroiler distribution system that creates entrepreneurial opportunities for villagers, and d) by increasing production of the family flock, promote gender equality and raise the social status of the woman of the household. Read more…
